Chiang Mai - Day 5

A day at Dokmai Gardens.

Arranged taxi to take us to these gardens. Although small compared to several other well known gardens on the tourist trail the write up sounded good, and easier to walk round. We were met by Eric the owne,. he was Sweedish with a Thai wife. Eric had started the gardens from farmland that he and his wife had purchased 6 years ago in a fairly remote area 40 mins drive from Chiang Mai. He was very passionate ..... almost fanactical about plants, trees and flowers. For the first 2 hours Eric led us around the garden....we were his only visitors.........telling us every detail of every plant as we followed him around. When finished with one plant he would march briskly off to the next. However, it was very interesting, but too much information in a short period of time to take it all in. On arrival we had agreed to have lunch there, and this was prepared by his wife for 1.00pm. Although nice it was £4.50 each, our dearest meal since arriving in Thailand. After lunch we agreed with Eric to wander around on our own as we had seen numerous birds and butterflies during the morning tour. Before leaving Eric looked at some of the picture we had taken and produced books to try and identify them, much to the annoyance of the taxi driver who was waiting to take us back, Back at the guest house Janina as requestd emailed two pictures which he was unable to identify.  The next day an email arrived from Eric, not only had he identified one of the butterflies but put it on his web site as a new species seen in his garden, and had been taken by Janina Tomsett from England.

Other photo's taken at the gardens
