Chiang Mai - Day 2

A leisurely breakfast of toast and fried eggs, with tea and orange juice set us up for a day of strolling around the old city (called it a town in previous entry) The intention was to hire bikes, but Janina had trouble finding a bike which did not wobble!!!! so changed our plans to explore on foot with the aid of tuk tuks and sorng-tau-ou's (coverted pickup trucks with bench seats. Sorng's are only 20 bhts per journey.
We visited 8 temples dating from 1296. They are all free to enter and are mainly prominent gabled buildings painted scarlet and gold.

Lunch was again typical Thai food. The food we chose was cooked in the same room and not one of our best choices.  The toilet was outside and around the side, just a ceramic bowl set in the grond style, with a bucket of water and ladle to flush it.
Continuing are stroll we came across this gentleman, he was american and been living here for 25 year and not cut his hair or beard for 25 years, also very tall.

At 4.30 we visited the night market before it became too crowded, but it still took nearly 3 hours to walk up one side and down the other. By the time we left the place was heaving and you had difficulty in reaching the front of the stalls. Again everything is so cheap, a large range of items for sale, many are hand made.

This stall was selling dog accessories

Whilst eating our evening meal we noticed people out in the street looking up into the sky and pointing. Alien spaceships i thought and joined them on the street. The Thai waitress appeared to be the only person who knew what was happening.........a total aclipse of the moon. As the clouds cleared just a slither of the moon was showing. Back at our guest house we stood outside as the clouds began to clear noting a bit more was showing, a couple walked by wondering what we were looking at, then another couple.......we watched and talked for about 30 mins, it's strange out here how easy it is to talk to total strangers.
