Leaving the Island and arriving in Kanchanaburi

Saturday 21st January, time to leave our Island and travel to Kanchanaburi via Bangkok. Decided to book the mini bus as it included pick up from hotel to ferry terminal, ferry crossing and the 331km ride back to Bangkok. Pick up was at 9.00am, and we were dropped in Bangkoks Khaosan Road backpackers area at 4.30 pm. For the first time we had not prebooked accommodation, so chose an alley off of the Khaosan road and started looking. Experienced travellers will look at several before deciding, our first one looked ok...... twin beds, a/c and hot shower, and only £15, too tired to search any further we booked it. Found the nearest travel agents and booked mini bus for 9.00am the next day to take us to Kanchanaburi. Had our evening meal, took a few pictures and retired early to our beds

Unfortunately although down an alley we were away from the noisy area, there was a bar nearby which had live music till 1.30 am. Up bright and early found a restaurant for a cheap breakfast, and then waited to be picked up for our mini bus. An hour late somebody eventually arrived and told to followed him on foot for 5 mins to a main road. Waited here for another 10 mins while he collected other people, then put in a taxi for short ride to a mini bus. Loading the bus with 14 passengers and their luggage plus a kitten is like a Rubik cube, 1000's of ways to do it but only one works. A hair raising journey as the driver tried to make up time, eventually arriving at our guest house at 1.00pm.

  1. Well I don't know how the other readers of the blog feel, but I think you have done a brilliant job of being independent travellers!
Despite all your reservations you have proved that you can do it, and at a fraction of the price it would have cost had you gone with a tour operator, (and for 3 times longer). You have been to 3 countries and had so many amazing experiences, all at your own pace. Well done!!
